    My Dear Son,

    …Not be long till holiday times. I used to have great pleasure in looking forward to that time when we should have our boy home and get him plenty of good things to eat. The best fruits and jellies had to be put away for that time. Well I hope we shall enjoy those happy times again.

    I have realy forgotten how to keep house. And worse than all, I am inclined to be lazy. Just to think soon be two years since I cooked a dinner. I believe I would rather like a little of it again. But not as much as I used to do. I think I would cut out the washing and ironing. I worked pretty hard but it did not hurt me. I feel better than I have done for years, no trouble of any kind.…

    Most of the women drink here. They drink as much as the men. Go in the saloon you can see crowds of them in there drinking and their little children waiting outside for them. They won't let children under 14 in the saloon. This is the worst country for drink I ever saw.…
