    My Dear Son,

    …Pa is satisfied in his own mind that you will be assistant to Dr. Halsted. I hope he is correct in his imagination if it is what you would like, but you will soon be very hard to please in a position and you ought to be. But I would not be too hard to please for a year or two, till you get a good start at Hopkins.…

    When we go sight seeing looking at the store windows, Pa will look out for something for Walter, and he will say this will be nice for him, that will be nice for him. I keep telling him I don't think he would care for that. I don't think he would wear it. Oh you bet he would he'll say just like he was when he bought the diamond. I thought you would not like it (you know I am always right). He says he would keep that girl for you till you were able, or I might say both of you. I say no, let her father keep her. He is well able to do so and she can wait like I did till you are able to keep her. I wrote to her last week. Pa made me write right away. He is afraid somebody might get in ahead of you. He thinks she would just suite you. I think she would be all right. I don't think she is good enough for you (J.D.: I do). We will have to tell her what you say or probably send your letter to her.

    Well we had a nice walk yesterday, went to see the palace. It had been renovated. It is an immense building. They have more room than most people in the slum district. They take a great pride in keeping statues clean, continually washing them, more particular than about keeping themselves clean.…
