Schaumburg, Ill, May 28, 2024 – The Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) and Neurosurgery Publications are pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Georgios Maragkos as the 2024-2025 Neurosurgery Publications Resident Fellow.

Dr. Maragkos was selected after a thorough review of all applications received by the Selection Committee.

Dr. Maragkos is a neurosurgery resident at the University of Virginia. Dr. Maragkos grew up in Athens, Greece, and completed his Medical Degree at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, where he graduated with the highest honors, “Arista”. He then worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard University and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA, where he spearheaded over 40 publications during his two-year course. He proceeded to complete a pre-residency neurosurgery fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital/Icahn School of Medicine in New York City, NY, before matching as a neurosurgery resident at UVA.

Dr. Maragkos’s clinical and academic interests are focused on skull base surgery, neurosurgical oncology and vascular neurosurgery, as well as biostatistics, quality improvement, and artificial intelligence (A.I.). Dr. Maragkos is particularly drawn to exploring novel applications of A.I. in neurosurgical practice, such as automated image analysis and natural history prediction. He advocates for the democratization of A.I. within the neurosurgical community, emphasizing the importance of sharing its strengths, opportunities, and shortcomings at a broader level.

“It is a distinct honor to be selected to serve as the Neurosurgery Publications  Resident Fellow for the upcoming academic year. I am particularly excited to work with the editorial team, who push the needle forward for our specialty by collecting, reviewing, curating, and disseminating the latest advances and improvements in our practice”, said Dr. Maragkos.

“We are delighted to keep the tradition of the Neurosurgery Resident Publications Fellow.  As with every year, we received many superb applicants.  We look forward to giving Dr. Maragkos this unique opportunity, and to really integrating him into the peer review process and learning about general management”, said Dr. Douglas Kondziolka, Editor-in-Chief, Neurosurgery Publications.

    Congratulations to Dr. Maragkos!
